My background. One of my absolute favorites of my hubby @autkast33 and I. Hard to believe this was so long ago.
Some people have asked to read the commencement address I delivered this morning to the 2013 graduates of Butler University. So here it is.
My own commencement speaker, who shall remain nameless, began with a lame joke about how these speeches only come in two varieties: Short and bad. This…
Now ^that^ is a commencement address. Awesome.
I have always loved this trek to Greeley from Castle Rock. I dunno why. It’s boring. Dry. Dull. But golly, it brings back so many awesome memories. Like that one stretch of highway where Rink’s car broke down after orientation. Or the many mini road trips with the girls to Estes or C-Rock jamming to Relient K and Barcelona and Mumford. I still miss college from time to time, even after a year and a half of being done with that chapter of my life. So weird to be going back up to watch my friends closing that same chapter. UNC at Greeley will no longer be “Greality” for you guys! Whatttt?! :)
Congrats to all of you! So proud and excited for your new chapters as college grads!
I was just talking to Nick about this!

I sat in a courtyard one Wednesday night, watching 5th and 6th graders be their awkward, not-quite-teen-but-not-quite-children selves before a youth group event at the church I work at.
One boy walked by a young lady and you could see the wheels turning in his head. Quickly, as if he was about to…
Okay. This is awesome. I’m applauding right now.
That’s why I’ve always loved and appreciated when my guy friends compliment my appearance. Even though some people would make weird faces like, “Uhh, she has a boyfriend, gosh,” or “Keep it in your pants, geez,” It used to make my mad that people would respond so awkwardly when a guy complimented a girl with no romantic/flirtatious intent. In fact, I was always very flattered and thankful when a guy friend took notice of my appearance in such a way. Men can compliment and notice beauty without being lustful. And they should be able to tell a woman (friend or stranger) that she looks beautiful without being accused of lust or hitting on her.
Because telling me I look beautiful is kind and thoughtful and life-giving. And women feel so lowly about themselves and their appearances that it is something we should hear. We need to know that other people disagree with us: that they think we are beautiful when we feel that we’re hideous. (Of course, some people can make it into something perverted and creepy, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.)
So thank you to all my wonderful guy friends who have told me I look beautiful. I appreciate you and your kindness, and I don’t think it was creepy, and I promise you that it was something I needed to hear at the time. :)
how scary is it that we teach our little girls that a wedding is the end of the story
It’s a potential plot point, but definitely not the end. It’s a possible beginning, but not an end.
I’ve never thought about it this much before, but wow. It’s true.

Comma splices. But otherwise, awesome.

Hyperbole and a Half posted again, and everyone needs to read it because:
- If you are depressed, it will resonate with you like whoa.
- If you are not depressed, it will clarify some stereotypes about depression that need to be said. An explanation like this has been needed for a LONG time.
- If you know someone who is depressed, you’ll be better at interacting with them after reading this.

Me at yoga, since it’s been over a year since I did a class and my fibro and arthritis are super flared.
But gosh, the pain hurts so good.
I felt a difference within the first two weeks of starting my diet, but I was (am) really strict about it.
Thanks for the feedback! I’m going to keep at it and hope for the best! I’m just hoping I can find a balance that works for both my stomach upset AND my arthritis/fibro. And still feel like I get to eat yummy things, haha.

*waves* I started the anti-inflammatory diet and felt WONDERFUL on it. Yes, you have to be VERY strict. No dairy, sugar, nightshades, caff etc
I’ll keep at it. And I’ll try not to cheat at all. Or at least, very often, haha. I’m just a foodie. I love food. Gah. But thank you so much for leaving a comment! I appreciate hearing that it’s worked for people!

We are all looking for something
beautiful, a phrase
or art hanging at tasteful
angles and color, yes
color like the seismic soul.
And sounds like laughter
and sunrise are bouquets
of chords we play
on sentimental
occasions. Beauty
is the monster behind closet
doors, and in our fear
we convince ourselves
to take one
peek.
I have some seriously talented friends.
